Sometimes you can just have too much sweet gels and snacks on a ride – especially on long rides or 24 hour races, the need for a savoury snack can become an obsession. But what can you have? Pies and meaty products quite often have a lot of fat to digest and everyone is familiar with ‘Scotch egg burps’ on a climb.
It’s been one of our favourite long-ride conversations ‘What savoury flavours would you find appealing about now?’ – and we’ve been through many suggestions: from kebab and chili, through halloumi to prawn korma flavours. It seems that we’re not the only ones though, and Clif has been having the same thoughts, launching three new ride snack flavours at the Sea Otter.
There’s Sweet Potato and Sea Salt, Banana Beet and Ginger, plus Pizza Margherita. The resealable packs have around 160-200 calories in them, dispensing an easy to swallow baby food-like consistency (or astronaut meal if you prefer the thought to baby food). The flavours are tasty but not overpowering and we reckon that they’ll be appealing after six hours of riding. As they’ve just launched, we’ve got no UK prices or availability, but hopefully you’ll see them soon.
So, what are the best savoury flavours that you’ve come up with?

Scotchsuma – sausage meat wrapped around a satsuma and coated in breadcrumbs. Sweet, juicy, savoury.
Wouldn’t a Scotcherine be better, slightly sharper on the inside bit to combat the stodginess of the coating. Would need to be black pudding in the sausage mix too, unless eating blood counts as doping…
Toffee onion
On a stick
You lot are gross 😉
Squeezy baby food was my 24 hour solo antidote to sickly cack. As ever I’m ahead of the curve.
Great idea but some curry flavours would make it even better 😀
