Fresh Goods Friday 316

by 10

Public Service Announcement: it is Friday.

Public Service Announcement: Monday is Hallowe’en.

You have the weekend to decide, do you:

A. Turn out all the lights and pretend you’re not in.

B. Greet children knocking on your door with a basket of chocolate-coated brussel sprouts.

C. Head out into the neighbourhood in your best fancy dress and see how much sweetie swag you can get. Those Haribos will come in handy on rides, right?

Whatever you decide, don’t waste the whole weekend carving pumpkins, because by next weekend it’ll be NOVEMBER. Which is surely going to bring wind, rain and winter? Certainly, having got all that spooky cobweb stuff out the way, it’s going to bring the first glimmers of tinsel, tasteless jumpers, and mince pies. Although we have noticed that one of our STW Special Forces Team has been indulging in some very early consumption of those spiced fruit treats already. Hang your head in shame Mr Miles.

Repent thy mince pie! Repent! REPENT!

Anyway, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Before we can move into the season of spiced fruit treats and mulled delights, we have other goodies awaiting you, here, and now. Bring it on people. Fresh Goods Friday, we are in you.

Specialized Camber Carbon Comp 29

Monster Green Monster Bike

This green monster (the colour is officially called monster green) from Specialized is a 120mm travel trail bike with 29in wheels. The Camber sits between the race-oriented Epic and long-travel Stumpjumper, and is pitched as a lightweight XC/trail bike. FYI; the Camber also comes in a 27.5in variety that’s equipped with 130mm of travel. However, we decided to put the big wheeler to the test.

This bike will be featured in issue #110, where we’ll be pitching it against a couple of other big name brands in a trail bike shootout. Oh, did we mention Issue #110 comes with a free calendar? Everyone needs a calendar right? Yes, everyone does need a calendar. So get your subscription in ASAP!

Quality Street Purple. Purrrty.

CNC machined aluminium pedals from Hope with Cr-Mo axle and a norglide bush and three cartridge bearings in a fully sealed chamber. Available in 6 colours.

RST Rogue Fork

rogue-rst
Wil’s Heart Black.

The Rogue is a chunky trail fork from RST, and it’s available with up to 160mm of travel. This will be heading in to our Trail Forks Grouptest for Issue #110, so we had one sent to us in a 140mm travel option. The basics: it’s Air-sprung with a coil negative spring, and it uses a sealed damper with adjustable rebound damping and a compression dial that offers multiple clicks between full open and fully closed, QR15 thru-axle and 180mm post mount. Boing!

K-Edge Garmin Sport Mount

k-edge
Cortina Striped.

A CNC machined aluminium Garmin mount from K-Edge, built to the same standards as those used by Team Sky apparently. Maybe this is what Chris Froome spends all his time looking at.

Kali Protectives Maya Helmet

Kali Maya
Carrot Orange

Made with Kali’s ‘Composite Fusion Plus+’ technology, this is a clean looking enduro lid. Lots of coverage around the back of the helmet, and plenty of ‘meat’ to the overall construction.

kali-maya-1
Dual closure system

Bug mesh to keep the critters out, plus padding to keep your noggin comfortable.

kali-maya
Hannah’s Heart Black

Also available in stealth enduro black, and other colours too. Comes with mounting system for ‘accessories’ – we’re assuming lights and Go-Pros, not earrings and feather boas.

Lizard Skins MacAskill Lock-On Grips

FIre Red. The camera struggled on this shot – these are bright!

As designed and used by Danny Mac, not guaranteed to make you as cool as him, but will grab as much attention in this BRIGHT colour, which really is brighter than it looks.

Maxxis Minion DHF 27.5×2.50 WT Tyres

minion-dhf
Nobbly Bobbly

New tyres for wider rims from Maxxis. The venerable Maxxis Minion DHF is already a very popular option with trail riders wanting maximum grippage, so this will likely be another well-received addition. The “Wide Trail” designation refers to the fact that this casing is designed specifically for use on wide rims. No more weird shapes and awkward bulging then. Do Maxxis make jeans too?

Maxxis Minion DHR II 27.5×2.40 WT Tyres

minion-dhr
Fab.

…and DHF for the rear. Packed with all the good stuff, including the EXO sidewalls, 3C triple rubber compound, and tubeless ready beads for easy tubeless setup. The DHR uses longer horizontal blocks to provide increased climbing and braking traction, making it ideal for rear use.

Maxxis Shorty 27.5×2.50 WT Tyres

shorty
Zoom.

More tyres for wider rims. Maxxis claims the Shorty is designed for “loose or slightly-muddy conditions”, and with a widely spaced tread pattern, it does look like it should be a nice addition for some moist riding conditions over the next few months. We shall be putting these to the test ASAP!

Orange Seal Tubeless Sealant

sealant
Glowing Orange

Tubeless goop from the folks at Orange Seal. It’s a latex-based sealant, but it’s packed full of Nanites. We originally thought Nanites was the collective noun for a group of militarised nannas, but after reading Orange Seal’s website, we’re now informed that it’s actually lots of tiny solid particles that help to clog up punctures.

SRAM Eagle XO1 Chain

  • Price: £50
  • From: SRAM
sram-eagle-chain
That eagle means business

A new chain for James to accommodate his longer rear end (on his Cotic). Ready to shift over all twelve cogs on that enormous 10-50t Eagle cassette. It’s not gold like the XX-1 Eagle chain is, so James will just have to explore his hip-hop roots another way.

SRAM 12 Speed Quick Link

  • Price: £14 (for both links)
  • From: SRAM
sram-quick-links-eagle
Taste the rainbow

Specially rainbow anodised to make them easier to spot on your chain. Comes as a twin pack.

45NRTH Wolvhammer Boots

wolvhammer
Bring on the freeze.

Boots. BIG boots. For when it is COLD. The Wolvhammers are for -18°C to -3°C. So you could wear them to ride to your Scandinavian Death Metal Thrash Concert on your fat bike in the depths of winter. Win.

Happy Bottom Vegan Bum Butter

bum-butter
Apply yourself, or ask a friend.

Pleasant smelling balm for smearing on your bottom. So your bottom will smell nice and, more importantly, won’t get chafed on your ride. Bike ride that is.

WTB Ci31 Carbon Rims

  • Price: £469.99, each, rim only
  • From: Hotlines
wtb-wheels
Wiiiiide. Niiiice.

31mm internal width carbon fibre rims from WTB, available in the UK from January 2017. Oooh.

wtb-decal
Contour line style decals.

wtb-2

We’ve had them built up onto Industry 9 Torch hubs. The result is some rather lovely chunky looking wheels that weigh very little when you pick them up. WTB has already had the Ci24 rims kicking around for a while, though these wider Ci31 wheels look like they’ll be good testing for those new Maxxis WT tyres. With a 31mm internal width, they should also suit up to a 3.0in plus tyre.

WTB Warden 27.5×2.3 Tyres

wtb-warden
Solero.

Grippy sticky hold on and race tyres for riding all of the mountain. Like the Maxxis Minion, the Warden has its roots as a downhill tyre, but has been given a folding bead and some changes to the compound to turn it into a burly aggressive trail tyre. The tread pattern looks toothy, so this is likely to be another mud-capable tread.

Ergon GE1 and GE1 Slim Grips

ergon-grips
White Knight, Blue Blood.

Dual compound zones for support and comfort, designed specifically for wider bars and an ‘elbows out’ ride position. Now available in a Slim diameter option, which is the white/grey version on the left. The blue model on the right is the regular diameter version. Ol’ little hands Wil is going to try the thin one.

Fabric Compact Pumps

  • Price: R150 £26.99, R200 £29.99, M200 £32.99
  • From: CSG
fabric-pumps
Pleasingly tactile pumps.

From the top, we have the M200 Hi volume trail pump, the R200 Hi volume compact road pump, and the R150 Hi pressure compact road pump. A rubbery hose pulls out of the end, making it easier to access your valve. Get pumping and get on your way!

And so onwards we go, towards the weekend. After the week that’s past, Hannah’s Youtube recommends are a strange mix of thrash metal, unicycles, and Selasi from Great British Bake Off. But somehow this one got in there, so here we go.

Enjoy!

ST Out.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
