Chimp For Charlie: Fundraiser On December 14th

by 0

Ride For Charlie was set up in memory of Charlie Craig, a 15 year old boy and bike racer who suddenly passed away in January this year. It funds upcoming young (14+) riders who show the talent and drive to race like Charlie did.

The Mid-Shropshire Wheelers are hosting an evening event to raise money for the cause, with a talk and a raffle. It’s titled “Chimp For Charlie: An Evening With Tim Buckle” and is going to be on December the 14th at the Darwin Community Centre in Shrewsbury. More details below, and you can also find the event on Facebook here.

They say:

“The Mid Shropshire Wheelers are proud the host a Chat for Charlie charity night. Charlie Craig passed away on the 20th January 2017 aged only 15. Mum and Dad, Sarah and Nick Craig have created Ride for Charlie to help other young Cyclists do amazing things. https://www.rideforcharlie.com/

“We have been lucky enough to book Tim Buckle for the evening. Tim is a former British Cycling team rider and coach. He now works for Dr Steve Peters author of the Chimp Paradox, as a Psychological Skills Mentor. Tim will be giving us his Chimp for Charlie presentation about how to manage your own life and performance.

“Nick and Sarah have been racing and making friends in Shropshire since the National Champs back in the early 90’s. George Watkins  (picture attached) from the Mid Shropshire Wheelers came up with the idea of hosting an event. I had been to Tim Buckle’s first Chimp for Charlie at the Hope round of the MTB Marathon series with my son Lewis, George knew Tim from coaching together. the rest is history. We are having a raffle and we’ve had some really great support from local companies, Trail Head, Dave Mellor Cycles, Stans/Trek, Plush Hill Cycles, Clee Cycles, TORQ Performance, Fibrax  and I’m sure others will be only too willing to join in.”

David started mountain biking in the 90’s, by which he means “Ineptly jumping a Saracen Kili Racer off anything available in a nearby industrial estate”. After growing up and living in some extremely flat places, David moved to Yorkshire specifically for the mountain biking. This felt like a horrible mistake at first, because the hills are so steep, but you get used to them pretty quickly. Previously, David trifled with road and BMX, but mountain bikes always won. He’s most at peace battering down a rough trail, quietly fixing everything that does to a bike, or trying to figure out if that one click of compression damping has made things marginally better or worse. The inept jumping continues to this day.
