Day 25 – 30 Days of Biking

by 1

If you’ve not heard of it before, 30 Days of Biking is a personal challenge with a charitable edge. People pledge to ride their bike every day in April, and for every two that do, 1USD is donated to World Bicycle Relief. This year we have six riders attempting the challenge.

Day 25

Another day of very British riding in very British weather.

Did Adele really ride, or is this CGI?

Went out in the rain and was rewarded with this moment of pleasure thanks to evening sunshine and the big sky. Wow.

The commuter bike: home of set-up ‘innovation’

Just a short work commute today, but I did pick up a longer seat post for the pink, small wheeled bike to save my creaking knees. The trains were packed again with bike commuters of every size, shape and tyre size. Perhaps this 30 days lark is catching on?

Today I returned to the scene of the crime. Canal commute both ways in foul wet, dreary weather one way, windy cold the other way. At least it kept the people away. Not much to say other than it’s good to be back riding to and from work again. Another 4 hours riding in the bank – a few bowls of pasta destroyed on the return home.

Just a few more rides to get this done – one of which will be the 200 mile Cairngorms Loop where of course, it’s snowing heavily. Ahh well, may as well finish it off properly.

Still plenty of light left, keep going…

Went riding with some friends of friends all arranged through Facebook. Didn’t quite know what I was getting into. Turned out to be a very pleasant XC ride. Rode until it was dark, then drank beer. Perfect.

At least Lara didn’t have to sleep out in the rain.

Totally banjaxed after a weekend fatbike bikepacking around Watership Down. Thought a very short mtb spin on the flat might help. Didn’t bank on shutting the front door in glorious sunshine, then spending the next 20 minutes in a freezing cold April shower, only to have the sun come back out as I got home. Oh well.

Is that fizzy red wine? Or just the wrong sort of glass?

Met the boy after work. Heavens opened. Drank Vimto* until the skies cleared.

* not sure it was really Vimto nor advisable on a Monday evening

Rolling rolling rolling…Raw behinds?

Hannah is beginning to feel that another pair of undershorts is in order. With all this cycling there is quite a lot of demand being placed on both her bottom, and the washing machine. If you’re going to ride every day, you need a lot of kit, or a poor sense of smell.  There’s a lot said about n+1 when it comes to bikes, but not so much about the kit that goes with them. One helmet, three pairs of shoes (to allow drying time on consecutive wet days), four pairs of undershorts…maybe one merino t-shirt (and wear it all week), a windproof, a waterproof…gloves (many, many gloves)…

What do you think is a sensible amount of clothing? Or does sensible not come into it?

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
