Director, Steve Macdonald picks up the story:
We are Square Wheels Cycles and we come from the square in Strathpeffer, the truly wonderful Scottish Highlands riding mecca. Just to clear things up, a bike shop with square wheels we are not, OK!
Square Wheels came into being when I woke up one morning and found a bike shop my garage. In my spare time (ha ha as if that exists), I also organise the world-famous Strathpuffer 24 MTB race, and have been involved in trail building and trail access since I was in short trousers.
We are one of those amazing little bike shops housed in a building which is actually bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Put another way, it has a cubic footage equivalent to eight phone boxes standing on top of each other and yes being very popular, the phone is always engaged.
What brands do you stock and what’s your range of services?
We stock the very best in high end MTB brands, including Cube, Giant, Genesis and Saracen. We also don’t discriminate against roadies if they ask nicely. Bike hire, advice on riding locally, basically you want it, we’ll have a friendly, expert view on what to do next.
What’s your current best-selling/hottest product?
Cube bottle cages and water bottles.
Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?
We’re big fans of tubeless tyres up here.
Tell us something about your shop/staff that no one knows…
We are proud sponsors of a stage at the Tartan Heart Music Festival. Bike-wise we genuinely strive to give our customers personal service, attention to detail and our ‘no queue’ guarantee. If there are more than three people in front of you, we’ll close the shop! No fuss.
We also ride regularly from the shop on Thursdays at 6.30pm. We’re friendly types over on Facebook too for the social media types out there.
