This week, we introduce Moose Cycles:
Owner Greg picks up the story: ‘Moose Cycles came about in 1998, mixing up my work as a photographer and some part-time action in the bike trade. Riding eventually taking over from photography as my main passion. Mountain biking was largely about XC racing back then and suspension was only just beginning to become popular and viable. I was a relatively early adopter, having seen its benefits, and over the years we have watched the styles of riding change. We have carved a niche selling mainly what are now called trail bikes; specialising in custom builds, suspension bikes and a mean fleet of the very finest of demo bikes’.
We’re located in Colliers Wood, SW19 and being a relatively long established shop we now find ourselves one of very few London MTB specialists, serving the capital’s need for off-road, adrenalin action – on the way out to the countryside!
Jay, our top mechanic has been repairing and riding bikes for as long as anyone can remember and was one of my first customers in the shop when I opened. He too was an early suspension adopter, and has only recently acquired a hardtail to cope with the slightly damp trails we have had been experiencing. Paul, another long term mountain biker and cycle trade lifer (well, almost) steps in when the workshop gets busy. Lisa looks after the paperwork and is my long suffering partner and stoker on our Ventana off-road tandem.
We have a fully equipped workshop and service all aspects of mountain bikes, brakes, bearings, bushes, seatposts and are a Fox Service Centre. Keeping our customer’s bikes working is a fundamental part of what we do.
What’s your current best-selling/hottest product?
For a few years now the Ibis HD has been one of our most popular frames/builds. Carbon really has come of age now with most of our builds now made of the stuff.
Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?
We have sold hundreds of dropper posts and these have been one of our most popular accessories over the last few years. Almost every bike that goes out of the shop has one on.
Is there a forthcoming event you think our readers should know about?
We have a Demo Day coming up on the North Downs in Holmbury St Mary on Sunday 9th June. We will have a good representation of the brands we sell, with exact details to be finalised very soon. Stay in touch on Facebook and Twitter. Though we are not blessed with trails on our doorstep, most of our customers and staff ride in the Surrey hills, about half an hour drive away.
What about all those Demo Bikes and Custom Builds you spend so much time playing with?
Where do I start? Although space is a premium here, we have always tried to carry a good range of demo bikes and our current lineup is pretty special. Choose from a Santa Cruz Nomad, Santa Cruz Tallboy, Intense Carbine, Orange 5, Ibis Mojo HD 160, Ibis Mojo HD 140, Yeti SB66 Carbon and a Whyte 146. We’ve also recently got an Intense Tracer 275 650B demo bike (pictured above).
Otherwise, we spend a great deal of time working with customers on a range of custom builds. Check out this very nice Intense Carbine SL we recently did for a great customer of ours, Monika.
