Tuesday Treats 16: Drover Cycles

All off-roading is covered in its many forms.

Tuesday Treats this week comes from the wonderful Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye. With both feet firmly planted in Wales, but with the English border well in sight, the guys at Drover Cycles know a thing or two about riding bikes on both sides of the border! Not only do they build up fine steeds but can show you where best to ride ‘em. Take our word for it; earlier this year (and featured in Issue 71) these guys looked after us riding on their doorstep.

Our Premier Dealers have built up solid reputations for being not only top bike-nut hangouts, but top-drawer, bike-nut, prize-givers – this week Drover Cycles has upped the ante yet again by offering one very lucky reader, one very big chance to win £390 worth of a riding weekend (for TWO!) in the Black Mountains! We suggest you read on. Even if you don’t win the big prize, Drover Cycles has a special offer for ALL Premier Subscribers where they’ll put you up for free if you rent bikes. Details are below. Now, though, a word from the shop.

This week, we introduce Drover Cycles.  In its own words…

Of course it's always this sunny!

Drover Cycles is owned and run by Luke and Anna, ably assisted by Tom and a small but perfectly formed team of seasonal/casual staff located in the north-eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Yep, we’re small, but proud of it! We started out in 2007 offering bike hire and holidays, a year after returning from a little 21 month ride to Cape Town, which confirmed our love of bikes and belief that the world is best seen from the saddle. ‘Friendly and helpful’ is our mantra – we don’t think you can go too far wrong with that approach.

What’s your current best-selling/hottest product?

The Welsh flag socks from Sock Guy always seem to go down a treat with tourists and locals alike. Or do people just need dry socks more often in Wales? Lezyne’s alluring mini pumps and trail tools are also big favourites. November also brings in plenty of customers seeking illumination. We have Hope lights available for hire for those who like to try before they buy.

Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?

You can’t go wrong with Schwalbe tyres – there’s one (or indeed, two!) for every occasion… We also like to support UK brands (love the stuff), so Hope Tech kit is a pretty common theme here too!

What was the last custom build you did?

We have a pretty steady stream of custom builds going through the workshop, all of which end up being pretty special. The latest was a Saracen Ariel 14x frame built up with Kashima coated Fox 32 TALAS forks and Float CTD shock, a mixture of XT and SLX groupset, Shimano MT68 wheelset, Rockshox Reverb dropper post and Easton cockpit. By all accounts, it is a very capable machine.

Tell us something about your staff that no one knows…

Tank-testing bog is available for the hardy.

Tom has a first class degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Luke has a first class… appetite (especially when confronted with bacon butties). Anna would like to see the first class compartment of every train in the land, replaced with a bike carriage. Vive la revolution!

Is there a regular shop ride or forthcoming event you think our readers should know about?

We seem to spend all our time setting other folk off on lovely rides! So, most of our riding and route finding for new tours happens in the winter months.

New on our holiday programme for 2013 will be the Sarn Helen – An End to End adventure through Wales with a heady mix of forestry tracks, sweet singletrack, country lanes and yeah, OK, the odd knee-deep Welsh bog. Check out our dedicated page here for more info.

Ooh and in April 2013, we’ll be helping to host the first ever Hay Bike Fest, a three-day fiesta of on and off-road rides, demos, skills sessions and more. All the full details will soon be found at www.haycycling.org

What do Singletrack Premier Subscribers get from Drover Cycles?

As a special Tuesday Treats (time limited offer) Singletrack Premier Subscribers listen up! From now, until the end of December 2012 if you head over to see us and hire demo bikes (minimum two people, for two days), Drover Cycles will pay for you to stay the night in a lovely local B&B! Sweet eh?

You can find all our latest news on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
