This week in Tuesday Treats we’re heading to the heart of Edinburgh and the bonnie Canonmills district. If you’ve wandered the fine city streets you may have come across this quality bike shop and workshop tucked away there, the staff having a passion for custom exotica as well as the more down to earth products. Say hello to Edinburgh’s The Bike Chain…
Tuesday Treats wouldn’t be complete without serving up a quality competition. Up for grabs this week in the regular prize draw are two cracking prizes, worth a combined £200. First prize is a £140 POC Trabec Helmet and the runner-up will get a £60 voucher for a Supermarket Sweep at The Bike Chain.
Don’t forget that even if you don’t win a prize then you’re still a winner by subscribing, because your Premier Member’s Card entitles you to all sorts of discounts and other good things at any of our Premier Dealers.
This week, we introduce The Bike Chain:
“The Bike Chain. Your dream MTB bike build or personalised bike servicing awaits …”
What do Singletrack Subscribers get from THE BIKE CHAIN?
We offer 10% off to subscribers online and in store. This applies to everything apart from frames, complete bikes and workshop labour, so fill your boots people. You can now also avail yourself of free back issue magazine stock should you pop in store.
Other cool things we do are GoPro HD Camera hire at £10 for a weekend, we have demo bikes from all our brands and will be delighted to arrange you one, we don’t have it in store. We have strong relationships with Ridelines, The White Room and Basque MTB that help you get better at riding, go on amazing holidays and benefit from dealing with sound people that work hard to serve their customers well.
We offer tool hire too. You can hire an £800 pro tool kit from us for £15 per 48 hour period. Maybe you have a new bike to build? Or want to try your own repairs? This will make all the difference!
Tell us about the Bike Chain:
The Bike Chain is a manager owned bike shop established in 2007. We are three full-time, hard working hunks residing in our shop which is located in the busy Canonmills area of Edinburgh, EH7.
Existing to serve the local community of commuter, road and trail riders as best we can, we place an emphasis on running an efficient workshop and having lots of small spares that people need last minute. We have spent a couple of years establishing our online presence and have now re-focused our strategy to become an even stronger LBS – we get to chat to people more that way and that certainly makes us happier!
What’s your current best-selling/hottest product?
We recently took on Genesis bikes in the shop and they have been a massive hit with our customer base – we beat our sales expectations already. Other popular products are the Hiplok locks, Clif Bar, Timbuk2, Icebreaker, Gore-Tex Bike Wear and Madison clothing have all been really strong this year too. Our sales of Ibis have been pleasing as Mark is pretty passionate about them.
Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?
That’s a hard one as some of us change things around a lot but the one thing we all have is Fox suspension. Mark will be playing about with some X-Fusion stuff though soon, so that will all change again.
What was the last custom build you did?
A brand spanking Cotic Rocket, interestingly to an existing Cotic Soul customer. Great bike that. Usually we do a lot of Ibis and Yeti custom builds though. You may also have heard about our Dialled Bike Ti Alpines we had made. Lovely stuff.
Tell us something about your shop/staff that no one knows…
… then everyone would know about it… well, I’ve only worn lipstick the one time, I don’t know why you insist on bringing it up like this!
Is there a regular shop ride or forthcoming event you think our readership should know about?
Our Wednesday Night Rides are set to come back next year and may even be on a Tuesday instead – sometimes life gets in the way but we are shoving those things to the side and are planning on getting back out with all our favourite Wednesday night crew.
Also, we have a Yeti Evening planned in October (check out our Facebook page) with Pete from distributor Silverfish in an experiment to see how many Yetis we can amass in the EH7 postcode area!
