FOUR4TH Exodus

Another mail order lights company. More than any other bike product there’s something about lights that seems to appeal to the British shed-based tinkerer amongst us. The FOUR4TH lights look a bit ‘fancy DIY’ but not in an unappealing way. Crisp. And they’re certainly built to last. The lamp and mount attach to your helmet via a pair of oversize O-rings. Simple, quick and effective. The tilt-adjustability is a bit of a let-down, in that it was hard to set the nut in such a way as to enable on-the-fly adjustments without it being too loose (droopy) or too tight (rigid). It was a ‘helmet off and multitool out’ procedure. The four-pin/screw-collar cable connection is slightly fiddly but you only have to assemble it once (before your ride), so it’s perfectly liveable. The large button on the rear of the head lamp was easy to locate and operate. There’s just two settings on offer: high and low (you can get the light to flash as well, with a long press after turning the light off). Out on the trail the Exodus offered very useful illumination. Despite the extra LED and handful of extra lumens, it didn’t quite penetrate as far as the Diablo. It was noticeably broader in beam however and a lot of riders will be better served by this foreground-bias. With the Exodus you rarely miss or notice not having a bar-mounted light. Decent burn times too: three hours on full, twelve hours on low.

Overall: The best all-round illumination performance of any light in this test. A no nonsense light at a great price.
