Mont St Anne World Championships!

by 11

Just a quick story to report back on the UCI World Champs that happened this weekend…

Congratulations to Tracy Moseley who won the World Downhill Championships at the weekend at Mont St Anne in Quebec. The Trek rider came in seven seconds ahead of Sabrina Jonnier to clinch victory, with Rachel Atherton in seventh place.

Over in the men’s DH, Sam Hill won the race by 2.6 seconds, then Steve Smith, Minnaar and Aaron Gwin. 5th/6th/7th and 8th place were then filled with Brits with Gee Atherton, Marc Beaumont, Peaty and Danny Hart.

Here’s MTBCut’s take on things:

The XC races weren’t without some British colour either, with Liam Killeen coming in in seventh place, just ahead of Geoff Kabush. The top three in the men’s XC was José Hermida, Jaroslav Kulhavy and Burry Stander.

We have reason to celebrate with Annie Last getting the silver medal in the Under 23 Women’s XC, though there were no senior women racing (come on BC, sort it out!)

In other events, Katy Curd came fourth in the Four Cross and Lewis Buchanan came fifth in the Junior Downhill.

For less British-biased results, visit the UCI’s website for the full details and results.

(Edited to correct trying to write stories at midnight, sorry about that!)

And here’s a video from Santa Cruz. It highlights an interesting new UCI rule – that you have to pay 800 Euros if you want to video the downhill race…

Whatcha on about Willis… Minnaar won the DH World Championships 2010???.. sure looked like Sam Hill lording it up on the podium receiving the Rainbow Jersey… not like it was a last minute win causing editorial confusion he sat on the hot seat for a good 10 riders to come down none of them fast enough to take the win from him. If I am also right #5 Gee #6 Zoom Zoom Beaumont #7 Peaty #8 Hart ……. of course I would doubt such a notable mag could get such details wrong therefore I assume the UCI’s web site is wrong, they have been tweeting rubbish all night and freecaster were broadcasting old world cup footage… that was a quick story indeed

*Hi Max – story fixed now 🙂 *

    Eh?

Sam Hill won, been on the red wine tonight?

did someone look at the qualifying by mistake?? ;D

    “Burry Stander”

tell me you made that up too

Uhm – if Tracy had won by a minute, i think there would be a bit more hoopla?

Re XC Women, Hardly BC’s fault no GB senior women make the grade is it? You can only select riders that are good enough, especially when the Worlds are as far away as Canada. Gone are the days when just owning a bike was good enough for selection. It just so happens that Annie is the womens National Champion and is only 21. That statement should probably read…. come on women, sort it out.

Jenny Copnall’s not that slow… And there are other fast senior women in the UK. There were racers from San Marino, Estonia and Mexico there – who raced for their countries and flew their flags without coming anywhere near the winners’ time. Despite it being the World Champs, I still reckon that mountain biking is (also) about taking part too. What about all the fans who travel out there to watch. What do they do during the Women’s Elite final?

Jonnier was just 7.5 seconds behind Tracy Moseley, and that put her well ahead of all the other French gals. Moseley had a perfect run. Even more amazing that Leigh Donovan came back into competition after a long hiatus and went first and set a 5:34 that took about 12 or so riders before she was bumped out of 1st.

    Elite Women

1 Tracy Moseley (Great Britain) 5:17.47
    2 Sabrina Jonnier (France) 5:24.97
    3 Emmeline Ragot (France) 5:28.11
    4 Floriane Pugin (France) 5:29.81
    5 Mio Suemasa (Japan) 5:30.26
    6 Myriam Nicole (France) 5:31.45
7 Rachel Atherton (Great Britain) 5:33.80
8 Leigh Donovan (United States) 5:34.05
    9 Claire Buchar (Canada) 5:35.59
10 Jill Kintner (United States) 5:38.29

Yes, great to see Leigh out of retirement. I remember her racing at the Worlds in ’94, so there’s hope for us old giffers yet!

Props to Rachel though 16 seconds down after a trip over the bars! Could have been a British 1-2 if this wasn’t the case?

Chipps – Did Jenny not retire last year then?

What’s the point in sending people halfway around the world to get lapped out after 2 laps? I agree with giving people a go but Annie was several minutes quicker than any other women at Nationals, There is a big hole that needs filling in UK womens racing.
