For SPD users the journey into flat pedal riding can be a perilous one. Sure, you’re going to improve your technique and learn to bunnyhop properly, but you’re also liable to landing a set of pins into your leg. The problem is that a lot of shin guards look like they’ve come out of the Darth Vader spares bin, and for a lot of people are a bit over the top.
The Veggie wraps are made from neoprene with a plastic insert where your shin bone will be and close on the back using Velcro. This means they are lighter and better looking than full-plastic ones. It also means that if you ride a bit of street they can be worn under jeans a lot easier, so you can be down with the kids rather than down at A&E. They won’t offer as much protection as Darth’s legs, but they will stop silly pedal slips hurting like hell.
Overall: Thinking about trying flats again? Think about trying these.

Such a good idea. But Sim, how skinny are your ankles?!
Golf Clubs!
So there is no protection on the back of them then?
No, as in nothing solid, but yes as in your calves are covered.
[The text was lifted from a back issue of ST]. They look a bit too much like big socks for my liking 🙂
I blame lens distortion 🙂
They look soooo good, I think I’ll stick to SPDs..!
I think they might guard against nettle induced ‘fizzy shins’ on my local narrowing trails which do my head in (and shins)
zbonty – you should have a look at Trailguardz

there are loads of pads like this about. look for BMX stuff
I thought my legs were skinny, but I can’t do mine up with that much fastening overlapping!
I remember gettin rid of my old neoprene hard knox pads because they made my legs sweat and smell awful, at least hard armour has some ventilation. Wear them with seal-skinzs socks in the winter for that full scuba feel.
