Alpkit’s Big Shake Out

At Blubberhouses, North Yorkshire. What a jolly name. You couldn’t really have a more fun named place for holding such an event, but it also gives easy access to some of the best climbing in Britain, one of the country’s most picturesque rivers, as well as miles of bridleways and footpaths for bikers and walkers to enjoy.

The Big Shake Out is a great place to base your multi-activity weekend. There are many great locations within a 15 mile radius of our campsite; climb at Almscliff in the morning, kayak on the Washburn in the afternoon and sample the Stainburn north shore in the evening before returning back to base for food and a party.

Why the Big Shake Out?

The Alpkit Big Shake Out follows on from the informal Old Salty Dog weekend that Alpkit held at Llangennith last August. They put up the teepee, invited some friends and did some surfing.

Col from Alpkit: “It’s the first year, so it’s all a bit unknown, but the plan is to provide a base for people to camp, put on some food and a bit of a party, from where they can go off and do their own things during the days. There will be a few things going on, like Genesis bikes will be there with demo bikes, Pyranha with some demo kayaks, we’ll be running a freestyle kayak event too. The idea being that there will be a nice mix of climbers, mountain bikers, kayakers and walkers all in one place.”

I have been a writer for nigh on 20 years, a photographer for 25 years and a mountain biker for 30 years. I have written countless magazine and website features and route guides for the UK mountain bike press, most notably for the esteemed and highly regarded Singletrackworld. Although I am a Lancastrian, I freely admit that West Yorkshire is my favourite place to ride. Rarely a week goes by without me riding and exploring the South Pennines.
